History of the Choir

The choir started with the formation of the Galway Boy Singers in Jan 1998, under the directorship of Mark Keane.  The boys' first concert took place in Galway Cathedral in June 1998.

The following year, Mark indicated that he needed a male backing chorus, and adult male voices were added for the Dec 1999 concert.  Girls and ladies choirs followed in 2000 and 2001.

The mixed choir was formed in 2001/2, and the first trip abroad took place in Feb 2002 when members of the choir participated in the annual performance of Messiah in Handel's hometown of Halle in Germany.  Further trips followed to Royal Albert Hall in London in July 2003, Prague in April 2004, Budapest in April 2005, Vienna and Salzburg in June 2006, and Wroclaw and Krakow in Poland in June 2007.

The boys and girls, meanwhile, won many competitions in Cork, Navan and Sligo choral festivals.

The boys released a Christmas CD, A Feast of Carols.   The girls also released a CD, Mary's Lullaby, which was placed in the Lyric FM annual CD competition for choirs.

The adults also recorded CDs, Lumen and Lux Hibernae.

Mark resigned as Choral Director in December 2008, and was replaced by Norman Duffy in March 2009.

Galway Choral Association Limited, a company limited by guarantee was incorporated in November 2006, and charitable status for tax purposes was officially granted in December 2010.
